Low-Maintenance Vertical-Lift Gates are
Perfect for a Tight Squeeze
When
you need to secure access to an outdoor parking
lot, the gate presents you with your most
important choice. Fencing is pretty
straightforward, but the right
choice of gate can save you money and
hassle over the long term as well as reduce
the scope for accident and injury.
To
Swing or to Slide? That is the Question...
The
two most typical gate configurations are sliding
or swinging. A sliding
gate requires level ground not only at
the entry point but also to one side, where
the gate will move when it slides opens.
The mechanical drive for the gate is fairly
maintenance-intensive, and both snow and ice
can interfere with the gate's movement.
Sliding gates are also slow to open or close
in most cases - about 1 foot per second -
and require an easy-glide or cantilever system
that can be the cause of injury.
Swing
gates also require extra level ground,
but in the roadway either in front of or behind
the gate. Level ground on the road is
often easier to come by than level ground
to one side. Drivers must be cautious,
however, to stop their cars outside the arc
of the gate's swing, and snow and ice build-up
are also a problem.
Looking
Up: The Vertical Alternative
Instead
of the sliding or swinging options, a gate
can also lift vertically. Vertical
lift gates require no more room than a
roadway barrier while providing the security
of an automated fence gate. They are
easy to install and maintain, require no additional
level ground, and are virtually unaffected
by snow and ice build-up. Opening and
closing within 10 seconds, they are powered
by a rechargeable 12V battery that is charged
either by a conventional 110VAC trickle charger
or, where running electric lines is impractical,
by a solar panel. For more and more
companies and institutions, the vertical gate
alternative has things looking up!
